“Video plays an increasingly strong role in ensuring safer cities and securing businesses worldwide,” said Greg Brown, Chairman and CEO of Motorola Solutions. In August 2020, Motorola completed the acquisition of Pelco Inc. What does the future hold for the internationally recognized company Pelco, which has been a cornerstone of the global security camera market but has struggled to demonstrate convincing results over the past decade?
Motorola Solutions is a global leader in critical communications and analytics. By acquiring technology companies such as Pelco, VideoTec, Avigilon, Ava Security, and others, Motorola has strengthened its ambition to become a global leader in security through video and image analysis. Motorola's stance reflects a commitment to engage in open competition with notoriously known Asian markets that penetrate the market with low prices and aggressive business practices.
Pelco, which Motorola acquired for $110 million, is not the only company in their portfolio involved in security video systems. This has raised questions about whether the overlap of products with the Avigilon, Ava, and VideoTec brands will negatively impact the success of individual brands. John Kedzierski, Vice President of Motorola's video division, dispels any doubts. According to him, the market is shifting towards turnkey solutions, but Pelco products will maintain their position as an open video management system (VMS) that can be integrated by third parties, as they have so far. Pelco is suitable for solutions that can be connected to existing systems. By using the Onvif protocol, you can connect high-quality cameras with built-in image analysis to your existing system.
The combination of Pelco and Motorola is expected to be much more beneficial compared to a partnership with Schneider Electric, which is more focused on building automation. In the field of building automation, video systems find it more challenging to establish their place.
Not only due to Motorola's acquisition but also thanks to a high-quality and extensive product portfolio, we have become the official distributor of Pelco for the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
